This is the scarcer version of the first edition where the text on the front cover is in white rather than gilt and there is no plate of Hoffmann facing the title page.
Magical Titbits is the outlier in Hoffmann’s influential series of books on conjuring. Having written three extremely large and significant magic books between 1876 and 1903 he had hoped to carry on this trend with a fourth similar volume. Age and other commitments put a stop to this though and, to tie up loose ends, a smaller volume was produced.
The first part of this book consists of descriptions of new miscellaneous tricks, much as his previous volumes had done. The second, much larger, part focuses on the life and magic effects of Hoffmann’s late friend, and fellow magician, Hartz. Thanks to the inclusion of a biographical chapter, this book gives a rare insight into the working life of a late nineteenth-century conjurer.
